Waiheke Island Community Cinema:

For over 14 years Waiheke’s movie-going experience has been in the hands of a group of dedicated locals who love film. The Cinema is a charitable trust governed by a board of trustees and powered by mostly volunteers, screening films seven days a week with more than twenty screenings each week.

The cinema is well-used by community groups for fundraising events and special interest screenings as well as offering the usual mix of current art-house and blockbuster films. Residents and visitors love the quirky 50 seat venue filled with comfy sofas donated by the community.  Thanks to a successful community fundraising campaign, the cinema was able to go digital in 2013.

One of the unique things about Waiheke Cinema is the way it reflects the community to itself through locally made community stories which are screened before feature films.  These short documentaries are made by local filmmakers with funding support from the Cinema Trust.  The Trust also runs film making training and mentoring programs for youth.
